Tulum
Quintana Roo
A small town and temple site on the beach about 100 km south of Cancun. The beach is one of the most beautiful I've seen (not that my experience is all that wide, but I've seen a few). The temple site is perhaps the only Mayan site right by the ocean. The town has some good shopping and an ATM, and some friendly guys.
Mayapan
Yucutan
Mayapan is another temple site, inland near Uxmal. I didn't see much here. It seems to have a network of caves underneath it.
Uxmal
Yucutan
A larger temple site inland, maybe 60 km south of Merida. Not much in the way of town near Uxmal, but a gob of hotels. We started at Rancho Uxmal, which has very good food but not-so-good sleeping accomodations. The ruinas are pretty well restored, and have a very spacious, open feel.
Chichen Itza
Yucutan
A quite large temple site about halfway between Merida and Cancun. It has the largest ball court I've seen - huge and quite imposing. It also seems to feature more death-related things, such as platforms for displaying skulls of sacrifices, than other sites.

The beach in front of our cabana in Tulum. Lizard guarding the temple site. The ocean-side temple site at Tulum.

Cenote (cave with sweet water pool) near Tulum. Pelican at a sort of wildlife preserve near Tulum. Sunrise directly in front of the cabana. Wow.

Unusual round temple. Ah! The heat! I can feel it rising on my skin even now with the memory...

Uxmal pictures

Sound and light show - part of the "Nunnery" quadrangle. Temple of the Magician. Double Jaguar throne.

Temple of the Magician and a great butt. Corner of the Governor's place. Mr. Lizard.

A collection of ancient dildos? Up the steps of the Temple of the Magician. Jaguar tails are much more agile than I had previously supposed...

The big guy at Chichen Itza. Temple of the Jaguar and the Eagle. What are all these pillars for?
